Teachers are required to be registered prior to practicing as a teacher in an Australian school. Registration is the responsibility of Australian State and Territory Governments. There are variations in requirements between the States. Registration policy and administration will shift to a new national system in 2011 guided by The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL www.aitsl.edu.au)
Current registration requirements do vary between states. In general they consist of:
• A four year degree in teaching or a three year bachelors degree in another discipline and a one year graduate diploma in teaching
• Your own country Police check then an Australian check
• Mandatory reporting responsibility regarding child safety
• English at 7.0 IELTS or higher (varies from state to state with 8.0 required for speaking in some jurisdictions)
• 45 days minimum professional teaching practice in your qualification
• Some states require a first aid certificate
New registration requirements are currently being developed by AITSL backed by extensive consultations with the profession and the community. We anticipate that the new requirements will be confirmed in 2011 and are likely to include knowledge of the history and culture of Australia and its indigenous peoples and how the changing nature of society impacts on teaching and learning.
The Teach in Australia Programme will ensure that you can meet all the requirements and anticipated new requirements for registration as a teacher in Australia.
